Nature’s See Saw

I was taking a walk with a friend the other day when he brought up his supplements. He’s a regular floater - I introduced floating to him years ago, and he’s actually the one that pushed us to open Victory Float Lounge.

“I like to float more often in the winter. I like being outside soaking up Vitamin D all summer, and do what I need to balance my magnesium. But in the winter, I like to float often and supplement my Vitamin D.”

Lindsey and I are opposites when it comes to this too. I like to float in the winter, and in the summer time spend as much time outside as possible. She prefers to float more often in the summer, because she doesn’t like showering and heading out into the cold immediately after. (Cold therapy is actually good for you, but that’s a different story.)

The point of all of this - life has a natural rhythm. The seasons change. The tide comes and goes. We take it for granted because it seems to happen slowly, almost unnoticeable, but if you take a step back and change your perspective, you realize it’s a constant ebb and flow from one state to the next.

Often I think we resist this rhythm - trying to stay in place or isolate ourselves completely from it - instead of dancing with it. Wishing things would stay just as they are in a perfect moment, or worse yet, trying to change the present moment.

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and enjoy the dance.” - Alan Watts

It would be like wearing a parka in the summer because you prefer the snow. This one obviously doesn’t make sense. But wishing for a moment to be anything other than what it is, is equally silly. The only power we have is in the present moment. The past and future aren’t real, or even if you feel that they are ‘real,’ we have no power in them.

So, get your Vitamin D, float for peace and magnesium, and dance with what life throws at you.
