VFL & Thyroid Health
Recently one of our fantastic new employees in Sewickley, Sherrie, informed us that January is National Thyroid Awareness Month. She clued us into some really helpful information about our own wellness modalities that could be so useful for anyone dealing with thyroid disease or underperformance, which I am happy to share with you here.
Sherrie’s personal wellness journey began with consistent sauna use, so let’s start there. The benefits for those with thyroid issues are incredible:
On the surface level, those with an under-active thyroid tend to run colder than average, meaning using the infrared sauna just feels good. Especially during our Pittsburgh winters.
Going deeper, sauna use has been shown to help decrease the chronic inflammation that comes with diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
The infrared sauna in particular is better able to penetrate deeper (thanks infrared wavelengths), helping those with joint and muscle pain that so often come with these diseases. When your joints feel better, you’re more likely to move more throughout your day, which can help with weight loss when desired.
Obviously, you’re going to sweat, which is fantastic for detoxifying skin impurities and especially desirable when dealing with chronic skin issues like eczema and psoriasis that may show up as a result of thyroid issues. Plus, if you’re finding yourself spending a lot more time indoors and sedentary this time of year (and in our pandemic times), your body will thank you for the sweat session.
As I went through these points, I realized how virtually ALL of our modalities can benefit people dealing with thyroid problems:
Hop in the float tank to give your joints and ligaments a break from supporting your weight. You’ll feel the difference after!
The LightStim Red Light Therapy Bed ALSO uses infrared wavelengths and even provides a little bit of heat, making it a super relaxing alternative to the sauna if you’re looking for the decrease in systemic inflammation without the high, high temperatures.
Our Halotherapy space (we affectionately refer to it as “space beach” now), provides further anti-inflammatory effects, but this time for your respiratory system and skin.
And finally, the Somadome, our meditation pod in Lawrenceville, is there to help you relax and prep for going a little deeper in the tank or just in your personal mediation practice. More calm = less stress, and less stress leads to less inflammation over time. It’s all a win.
